Website design for doctors, GPs and private clinics

A clinic website does two jobs at once. It reassures new patients that they are in safe hands, and it saves existing patients a phone call by answering practical questions about appointments, repeat prescriptions, results and opening times.

Where websites for doctors & clinics usually fall short

Information that is out of date

Clinic hours, doctors on duty and fee schedules change, but the website was built by someone who is no longer around, so nobody updates it.

Medical content that reads like a brochure

Patients search for symptoms and conditions. A list of specialities does not help them decide whether your clinic is the right place to go.

Privacy worries about forms

Many clinics avoid online forms because they are unsure where the data ends up. The result is that every enquiry becomes a phone call.

Several doctors, one generic page

Patients often choose a person, not a building, and a single team photo gives them nothing to choose on.

Must-have features

  • Doctor profiles. A page for each clinician with qualifications, registration number, languages spoken, special interests and their booking link.
  • Appointment booking. Embedded booking from your clinic system, or a directory platform widget where patients already book you.
  • Condition and service pages. Plain-language pages for the conditions you treat most and the services you offer, reviewed by your clinicians.
  • Practical patient information. Opening hours, after-hours advice, how to get results, repeat prescriptions, fees and accepted insurance.
  • Accessible design. Larger text, strong contrast and simple navigation for older patients and screen-reader users.

Recommended pages

  1. Home
  2. Our doctors
  3. Individual doctor profiles
  4. Services
  5. Conditions treated
  6. Fees and insurance
  7. Patient information
  8. Telehealth (if offered)
  9. Contact and location

A starting point; the final sitemap is agreed with you in the brief.

WordPress plugins and integrations

  • Booking from your clinic platform: Systems such as Cliniko, Zocdoc, Doctolib or Practo, depending on your country, can be linked or embedded.
  • A HIPAA- or GDPR-ready form service: Jotform's HIPAA option or similar, so sensitive details never sit in WordPress.
  • Rank Math SEO: Physician and MedicalClinic schema plus sitemaps.
  • WP Accessibility helpers: Skip links, focus styles and checks to support WCAG compliance.
  • Simple Cloudflare Turnstile: Spam protection on contact forms without puzzles.

Named tools are common options, not endorsements; I work with what you already use where possible.

Local SEO tips for doctors & clinics

  1. Create a Google Business Profile for the clinic, and consider individual practitioner profiles for doctors who see patients there, following Google's guidelines.
  2. Use MedicalClinic and Physician schema, linking each doctor to the clinic.
  3. Write condition pages around the words patients use, and have a doctor review and sign each one so readers can see who stands behind the advice.
  4. Keep your listings on health directories consistent with the website's name, address and phone number.
  5. Add 'medically reviewed by' and 'last reviewed' dates to health content and keep them current.

Website FAQ for doctors & clinics

Can the site connect to our clinic's booking system?

Usually yes. Most clinic and directory platforms provide a booking link or widget, which I add to every relevant page and each doctor's profile.

Is it safe to collect patient details through the site?

For anything clinical, I use a form service built for health data, with the right agreements in place. General enquiries can use a standard form that collects only name, contact and reason for contact.

Who writes the medical content?

You or I can draft it, but a clinician should always review it. I add their name and a review date to each page.

Can you make the site accessible?

Yes. Builds follow WCAG 2.2 AA practices: contrast, keyboard navigation, alt text and readable font sizes.

Can we post notices like holiday closures ourselves?

Yes. A notice bar at the top of the site can be switched on and edited in a minute.
